Historic Progress! Hon. Akala’s bill for the creation of a new Ibadan State while making Ogbomoso the capital of Oyo State passed second reading!
I am delighted to pronounce that one of my significant bills at the House that was presented on the 28th of February, 2024, “A bill to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended to create a new state in the South West, Ibadan as the State while also standing as its own capital and a new capital, Ogbomoso for the already existing Oyo State.
While leading the debate on the floor of the House today, I stated that the proposal to make Ibadan a State is not just a constitutional restructuring, but a forward-thinking move that will address several socio-political and economic concerns. In support of my argument for Oyo State and Ogbomoso as its capital, I emphasized that Ogbomoso, under the kingship of his Imperial Majesty, Oba Gandhi Afolabi Orumogege III is rapidly growing in terms of population and urbanization.
As the second- largest city in Oyo state after Ibadan, it has experienced considerable population growth, and it is likely to continue growing due to its increasing urbanization and economic opportunities. By positioning Ogbomoso as the capital of Oyo state, there could be an opportunity to create more balanced development throughout the state. Read the document below to get the full debate.
